Project Description

This Gift Tree Planting Project in the area around McClellanville, South Carolina in the region of the Francis Marion National Forest. This area was formerly part of the large rice growing Tibwin Plantation. More recently, the area was owned by International Paper and principally used to grow and harvest Loblolly Pine for commercial production.

In 1989, the area suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Hugo, resulting in large scale deforestation. International Paper abandoned the property, and it is now managed by a local parks commission. Based on the area’s natural characteristics, the commission initiated a Longleaf Pine restoration planting project.

Restoring and managing the longleaf pine enhances the forest ecology and the highly diverse ecosystem. The incredible diversity of plant and animal species, many of which are endemic only to this habitat, includes rare species like the gopher turtle or red-cockaded woodpecker.
