“Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world.” – John Muir

Project Description

This Gift Tree Planting Project is in the area around Lapland in the southwestern part of the island of Nova Scotia, Canada. This reforestation project in Nova Scotia will prioritize climate change resilience and carbon storage, in addition to resilience against insects and disease and provide diverse habitat for flora and fauna. This newly reforested site will improve available habitat to local endangered species such as the Nova Scotia moose and Blanding’s turtle.

Your project focuses on restoring forests to allow long term conservation for both environmental and community benefit. Environmental benefits include erosion control and biodiversity improvement. The reforestation will provide opportunities for public recreation. During the planting process, the planting site will serve as field trip destination for local schools to educate students on reforestation. This project aims to increase diversity and mimic the nearby Acadian forests, and thus, will be planting a mixture of conifers and deciduous hardwoods. The conifer species include red spruce, white spruce, red pine, white pine, eastern white cedar, eastern hemlock, and eastern larch. The deciduous species include willow, alder, white birch, yellow birch, red oak, red maple, sugar maple, silver maple, and cherry.
