A City Worth Honoring: Plant a Tree in Newark, New Jersey

New Jersey carries a density of life and history that few states can match. From the communities of Newark to the shores of the Hudson, the people who call this state home share a deep sense of place. For those who lived here, raised families here, or simply loved someone who did, planting a memorial or celebration tree in Newark is a way to honor that connection with something that grows and gives back long after the moment has passed. Your gift tree becomes part of a real effort to restore green space in a community that needs it and deserves it.

Project Description

This Gift Tree Planting Project is in Newark, New Jersey, in the Abington Avenue School neighborhood.  This project is part of The Gifted Tree’s urban forestry projects where donations, instead of planting individual trees, will help plant groves of trees in urban areas – neighborhood parks, schools, and urban campuses – ensuring environmental justice in city-centered projects where trees are desperately needed. The trees planted are more mature in their growth cycle and average 3-6 feet in height when planted, helping to ensure long-term survivability and the ability to thrive in this urban area setting.

Newark has been subject to environmental injustices for decades due to high amounts of industry, development, and air and water pollution, and nearly all of Newark is designated as an overburdened community by the EPA. Most Newark residents have limited access to green space, and this project will help ensure that everyone has access to trees and the benefits they provide- air pollution removal, stormwater pollution capture, carbon sequestration, and urban heat regulation – regardless of their zip code or income levels. The tree planting events planned with this project will also help to bring neighbors together and build communities.

Many species will be planted to develop a diverse and resilient tree canopy and include Eastern Redbud, Hawthorn, Flowering Cherry, Lilac, and Maple, all native to the area. Your trees will be part of a healthy forest system and will protect biodiversity, creating habitat for migrating birds and pollinators. Additionally, your trees will provide social benefits, allowing the residents the opportunity to experience and enjoy their natural space and the resulting health benefits that open green space provides.

What Urban Trees Do for Newark Residents

Trees in urban settings do far more than add beauty to a block. In a densely built city like Newark, every tree planted delivers measurable, compounding benefits to the people living nearby. This is why the Abington Avenue School neighborhood was chosen as a priority location for this project, and why urban forestry is one of the most impactful forms of environmental investment available today.

The trees planted through this project work in several important ways:

  • Air pollution removal: Trees filter particulate matter and absorb harmful gases, improving air quality in neighborhoods where industrial and vehicle emissions are highest.
  • Stormwater capture: Tree canopy and root systems intercept rainfall, reducing runoff and easing the burden on aging stormwater infrastructure.
  • Carbon sequestration: As trees grow, they absorb and store carbon dioxide, contributing to local and regional climate resilience.
  • Urban heat reduction: Tree cover lowers surface and air temperatures in neighborhoods where paved surfaces and buildings trap heat, reducing energy costs and heat-related health risks.
  • Mental and physical health: Access to green space has been shown to reduce stress, encourage physical activity, and improve overall wellbeing for residents of all ages.

When you gift a tree in Newark, you are not just honoring someone you care about. You are putting those benefits into a neighborhood where they are needed most.

A Tribute That Reflects Newark’s Strength

Newark is a city that has faced adversity and come through it. It is home to some of the most resilient communities in the country, people who have built lives and legacies in the face of significant challenges. Choosing to plant a memorial or tribute tree here is a way of reflecting that same spirit back into the landscape. The trees growing in the Abington Avenue School neighborhood will outlast any single moment. They will shade the sidewalks where children walk to school, filter the air that families breathe, and stand as quiet evidence that someone cared enough to do something lasting.

Whether you are honoring a Newark native, celebrating a milestone, or giving a gift that reflects your values, a tree planted in this community carries a weight that goes beyond the gesture.

Frequently Asked Questions About Planting a Tree in New Jersey

The planting project is in the Abington Avenue School neighborhood in Newark, New Jersey. This is an urban forestry project focused on restoring tree canopy in an underserved community where residents have historically had limited access to green space. Trees are planted in groves across the neighborhood rather than in a single designated spot, and your tribute certificate will list Newark, New Jersey as the planting location.

Newark has been designated almost entirely as an overburdened community by the EPA, meaning residents face disproportionate exposure to pollution and have limited access to environmental benefits like clean air, green space, and shade. Urban tree planting is one of the most direct ways to address those disparities, and the Abington Avenue School neighborhood was chosen because it represents exactly the kind of community this work is meant to serve.

The project plants a diverse mix of native species including Eastern Redbud, Hawthorn, Flowering Cherry, Lilac, and Maple. Planting multiple species creates a more resilient urban canopy, one that can better withstand disease, pests, and climate variability over time, while also supporting a wider range of birds and pollinators.

Unlike some of our more remote forest projects, this is an urban neighborhood that community members pass through every day. The tribute certificate is a lasting keepsake that tells that story.
