“Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world.” – John Muir

Planting a tree is a profound way to honor the memory of a loved one or to celebrate a momentous event. It creates a living tribute that grows stronger over time, providing a lasting symbol of life and renewal. You can plant a memorial or celebration tree in the beautiful Mistehae Lake region of Alberta, Canada, contributing to a vital reforestation effort while creating a meaningful legacy.

Project Description

This Gift Tree Planting Project  is in the area around Mistehae Lake, a remote area of northern Alberta, Canada. This forest area was degraded in a large forest fire called the McMillan wildfire in 2019. The area has struggled to regenerate itself post fire, and the goal is to create a big healthy forest.

Planting trees in Alberta is an effective method to restore the land and eventually return the area to a spruce-dominated mixed wood forest. The species planted include black and white spruce, tamarack, pine, dogwood, poplar, and mixed native willows. Soil stability is an immediate ecological benefit of reforestation and the area provides enough light for a new forest to grow efficiently. This project focuses on restoring riparian function along river and lake banks and minimizing future bank slumping and erosion by re-establishing the riparian zone.

As the forest regenerates, it will provide a critically important regional habitat for furbearers, migratory songbirds, raptors and owls, amphibians, and black bears, moose, elk, and deer. This project will also provide jobs for people in the area, a better quality of air and water, and a recreational outdoor space for the citizens of this remote Alberta area.

The Lasting Impact of Your Gift Tree

By planting a tree in memory of someone special, you are not only creating a personal tribute but also making a significant environmental contribution. The benefits of this reforestation project extend far beyond a single tree, including:

  • Enhancing Biodiversity: Reforestation rebuilds essential habitats for the birds, mammals, and insects that depend on these forests for food and shelter. Your gift helps bring life back to the landscape, restoring a complex and vibrant ecosystem.
  • Fighting Climate Change: As your tree grows, it will absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, storing it within its biomass. Forest fires release vast amounts of stored carbon; replanting helps the landscape once again become a powerful tool in sequestering carbon and mitigating the effects of climate change. As evergreens, they continue to absorb carbon year-round and can store large amounts of carbon in their wood and the forest soil.
  • Stabilizing Soil and Protect Water: The extensive root systems of spruce trees help stabilize soil, preventing erosion and protecting the surrounding landscape. This helps prevent landslides, protecting the quality of nearby rivers and streams that provide water for local communities.
  • Hearty Species: Spruce can thrive in poor soils, allowing them to colonize and regenerate disturbed sites, such as those damaged by wildfires.
