“Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world.” – John Muir

Project Description

The Gifted Tree’s planting project is in the area a around the village of Dömös in northern Hungary. The town is situated along the banks of the Danube River about 25 north of the capital of Budapest. The project aims at repopulating a forest cover in the village damaged by snow and ice. These have created large gaps that have disrupted the regular tree population in this Hungarian village.

This project is different to traditional forest management methods. Sessile oak was selected as the main species, but several other species including Cherry, Pear, Linden, and Norway Maple were also chosen to provide habitats for local biodiversity. Shrubs will also be introduced into the gaps created by the ice hazards to enrich the ground cover and encourage natural regeneration of the area. Eventually, this forest in the making will become more resilient in the face of climate change and the planted trees will store carbon, thus helping to combat global warming and contribute to a multitude of sustainable development goals.
