Mojave Desert, Nevada
“Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world.” – John Muir
Project Description
This Gifted Tree’s Planting project is in the Mojave Desert region of southwest Nevada. The Mojave Desert encompasses 54,000 square miles and is often called the “high desert”, as most of it lies at elevations between 2,000 and 4,000 feet. It supports a diversity of flora and fauna. The goal of the planting project is to help repair the riparian areas in this part of Nevada. A riparian zone is the transitional area between a body of water (like a river, stream, or lake) and the surrounding land, essentially the “shoreline” of that water body. These zones are crucial because they serve as natural filters, prevent erosion, and support diverse plant and animal life.
Over many years, cattle grazing and invasive species have degraded or eliminated much of the native riparian habitat. Over the past decade, several non-profits have worked hard to remove invasive species and weedy vegetation that now open up acreage for your tree’s planting project. The species that will be planted include cottonwood, willow, ash, and mesquite trees. As your trees get established and grows, they will provide for additional and enhanced habitat for wildlife and improve flood and erosion control along the streambanks.
